French as a Second Language

Learn the language and its culture through "hands-on" experience in everyday communication situations. Create practical projects based on interesting themes. Communicate actively with other learners using authentic real-life resources.

The goal of FSL is proficiency in understanding, speaking and writing. Success in French 30 = Intermediate level.

Many enrichment programs exist for students studying French, including summer study and exchange programs funded by the federal government.

French 10

Beginning Proficiency Levels 2/3
Prerequisite: Minimum 2 years of Junior High French

5 Credits

This course is the continuation of the study of French at or beyond the mid-point of Beginning Level 2. This course is suitable for students entering high school with some background in French.

French 20

Intermediate Proficiency Levels 4/5
Prerequisite: French 10 or equivalent*

*Minimum of 3 years of Junior High French and teacher recommendation. Students entering French 20 from Grade 9 French must have mastered Beginning Level elements: Solid knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, culture and language learning strategies plus skill in comprehension (listening and reading) and production (speaking and writing). 

5 Credits

This course is also suggested for most students transferring from the French Immersion program into French as a Second Language.
