English is one of the required courses that students must take at all grade levels. Students will be enrolled based upon their Grade 9 ELA Teacher recommendation. It is important for students to determine their end goal for English and then follow an appropriate path.
English 10-1, 20-1, 30-1
The English 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1 are academically-focused courses for students who wish to attend a post-secondary institution such as a college or university.
This stream requires that students are motivated and become increasingly more independent. The courses are rigorous and regularly require reading and other preparation take place before class, so students must be able to balance school requirements with outside commitments.
English 10-2, 20-2, 30-2
The English 10-2, 20-2 and 30-2 are more generalized courses designed for the student who wishes to attend a technical or trade school, or to enter the workforce immediately after completing high school.
English 10-2 Prep
English 10-2 Prep is designed for those students who have struggled with English in previous years. This course helps students develop the skills necessary for English 10-2.
While exploring a variety of texts, students are encouraged to develop an appreciation for literature, to become more confident and competent in various forms of written expression, and to improve reading, writing, listening, speaking, representing and viewing skills.
Through the exploration of various forms of literature and other texts, including film, students are encouraged to improve their ability to think clearly, both orally and in non-written forms, set achievable and personal goals, make personal connections to literature and work collaboratively in partners/groups.
English 10-4, 20-4, 30-4
Depending on their Grade 9 ELA Teacher recommendation, K&E students may be enrolled in this track of English courses.
